In the beginning, these were being woven for the necessity to cover the floors, walls or doors and were being used to get the protection from damp and cold. Flat-woven rugs were being used by the people to get the flat surfaces with no piles.

Later the techniques of carpet weaving developed from flat weaving to a different technique which was loop weaving. In this technique of rugs weaving the weft strings were being pulled over a rod (commonly gauge rod) and then the maker creates the loops of thread facing the weaver and at the end of the process the rod was being removed or the loops were being cut over those protecting the rod.

And the resulting rug which will be achieved at the entire process would be much similar to the original pile rugs of the present time. While when it comes to the hand-woven pile rugs then these are being produced by knotting the threads strings individually in the wraps and the threads will be cut after every knot.

A Russian Professor discovered an amazing and the earliest existing Persian rugs in the year 1949 during burial mounds’ excavations in Siberia which was dated back to the 500 B.C. that earliest Persian rug is now placed in the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. Well, in the same area another rug was being found which is dated back to the first century B.C. well, the historical records of these beautiful and earliest rugs are showing that these splendid rugs festooned the court of Cyrus the Great which instituted the Persian Empire more than 2500 years ago.

The beginning

Sassanian dynasty

Sassanian dynasty gave us the first documented evidence. The emperor Heraclius took many fine articles of the rugs to form Ctesiphon. The era of Sassanian emperor was from 3rd to 7th century AD. History of Persian Rugs

Moguls Era

In the 13th century, the Moguls invaded the Persia and during this invasion, the weaving industry was declined and in true words, they broke the backbone of the weaving industry. They basically hit the artistic skills of Persia. But skills cannot be buried so the great time came and Tamerlane insisted to work upon the weaving Persian rugs skills. His successor Shah Rokh played a prominent role in the building of Persian rugs and gain flourished the great industry. He made his own looms and

Shah Abbas era

In 1499 Shah Abbas put a major stone in this journey by transforming the industry by the establishment of a royal carpet factory. In this time best designs were produced and the two known designs came from the mosque of Ardebil. The other most important work was the utilization of silver and gold in rug weaving.

Safavieh Dynasty

During Safavieh dynasty from 1502 to 1736 weaving skills were flourished. It was the dominated era of Iranian carpets. Iranians or Persian gained attention from all over the world. This time shows us the artistic skills of Iranian like weaving, painting, tile working, and calligraphy, etc. this era was the gifted era which gave us the carpet factories in many cities like Herat, Tabriz, Isfahan, and Kashan, etc. so, Iranian build the basis of the great mesmerizing motif designs and the patterns of the rugs which are still trending today.

16th-century revolution

In 16th century (discounted Persian rugs) carpets were started to export in all over the world like England, America, and Germany, etc. With the passage of time much new weaving, factories were established in all over the country.
